Marijuana use disorder, also known as cannabis use disorder, is a condition in which an individual’s use of marijuana has become problematic and is causing significant distress and/or impairment in their daily functioning. This can include issues with work, school, relationships, and physical or mental health.

Marijuana use disorder can range from mild to severe and can be diagnosed based on criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The severity of the disorder is determined by the number and frequency of symptoms experienced.

Excessive and regular use of marijuana can have negative effects on a person’s physical and mental health. Physical effects of excessive marijuana use may include increased heart rate, dry mouth, and impaired memory and concentration. Long-term use of marijuana has also been associated with respiratory problems, including chronic bronchitis, as well as a weakened immune system.  Mental health effects of excessive marijuana use may include an increased risk of anxiety, depression, motivation and psychosis. Chronic marijuana use has also been associated with lower lifetime milestone achievements and the development of other addictions, which can negatively impact a person’s relationships, work performance and overall quality of life.

It’s important to note that the effects of marijuana use can vary depending on a variety of factors, including the person’s age, frequency of use, and method of consumption. Additionally, the potency of marijuana products has increased in recent years, which may also increase the potential for negative health effects.

Treatment for marijuana use disorder typically involves a combination of behavioral therapy and, in some cases, medications. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective forms of behavioral therapy for treating cannabis use disorder.
