Is it just stress or anxiety?

Stress is caused by an existing stress-causing factor. Anxiety is stress that continues after the stressor is gone.  Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a mental disorder characterized by persistent and excessive worry and anxiety about multiple events or activities, often without a specific cause. Worries often seem to float from one problem to another, ranging across categories including  family, other relationships, work, school, money, and health. Even when they are aware that worries or fears are stronger than appropriate for the situation, a person with GAD still has difficulty controlling them.

In addition to excessive worry, other symptoms of GAD include difficulty concentrating, irritability, restlessness, fatigue, muscle tension, sleep disturbances, and stomach or digestive problems. People with GAD may also experience physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat. These symptoms can be severe enough to interfere with daily activities and can lead to a decreased quality of life.

A proper diagnosis of GAD should be made by a healthcare professional who will take into account the individual’s symptoms, medical history, and personal circumstances. Treatment for GAD often includes a combination of psychotherapy and medication.
